Review of the 14th Wood Conference
After fifteen years of successful resonance, the success story of the Wood Conference was continued on 25 February 2025 at the CTICC in Cape Town. A particular highlight of the event was its new look: the popular platform presented itself in fresh colours and with a modern appearance in keeping with its tradition of success. The event took place in the presence of around 700 participants and, as in previous years, once again proved itself in a hybrid format - either in person at the Convention Centre in Cape Town or as a digital guest.
The high number of participants confirms the organising team's professional preparation as well as the careful selection of the topic and the resulting programme.
After Roger Kuratle's welcome and introductory remarks, which emphasised the Kuratle Group's long-term commitment to the South African market, he stressed the positive development of both the business activities and the conference. The Wood Conference has now become a permanent highlight of the South African wood industry. As the conference continues to grow, there is enormous potential to further expand its influence on timber construction and sustainable building in South Africa. In collaboration with South African partner Universal Plywoods, the common goal is to raise awareness of timber as a valuable and sustainable building material. The industry and all its players must recognise that the overarching goal is to create a sustainable market for timber construction and at the same time make a significant contribution to reducing CO emissions.
The greetings from Deputy Mayor Alderman Eddie Andrews and Ambassador H.E. Mirko Manzoni were a special honour. In their speeches, they expressed their appreciation for the annual organisation of this established event in Cape Town. High-calibre speakers from South Africa, Europe and Switzerland then presented visionary projects that show how timber is revolutionising architecture and construction in the long term.
This year's theme: ‘Timber Nexus: Integrating Global Ideas for Africa's Growth’ emphasises the extraordinary potential of global collaboration. The aim is to shape urban landscapes in Africa through innovative timber solutions. Against the backdrop of Africa's impending urban growth, the conference focussed on the urgency and opportunities to create cities that harmoniously combine tradition, technology and environmental responsibility. From ambitious multi-storey urban developments to community-orientated projects, wood is proving that it is the material of the future. By adopting global approaches and adapting them to the unique contexts of Africa, creative solutions can emerge that meet environmental, social and economic challenges.
Thanks to the masterful moderation of Hannu Garny, Master of Ceremonies, and the professional organisation under the direction of Zaida Davids, the varied daily programme was perfectly coordinated.
At the end, Roger Kuratle thanked all participants, speakers and supporting partners for the successful organisation of the 14th Wood Conference in Cape Town. Looking ahead to the next edition, he promised another exciting programme.
The 15th Wood Conference on sustainable building in South Africa will take place on 24 February 2026 - a special anniversary that will be duly celebrated. We are looking forward to starting the planning.
